Policies: Computer Use Policy
INTRODUCTION
This statement outlines the policy regarding use of computers in the Library. This policy does not apply to computers in the MIC lab or in the CLA (Center for Learning Assistance). In response to concerns that Bradley students and faculty are having to wait for unreasonable amounts of time to use Library computers, this policy and guidelines are being instituted to improve physical access to machines for our primary customers. It establishes guidelines for staff to ensure that patrons are allowed adequate access to electronic resources within equipment capabilities. These guidelines will be posted at all affected public workstations.
POLICY
The Cullom-Davis Library provides computers for patrons to access electronic resources available both in the Library and through the Internet. As with printed materials, the Library endorses the Library Bill of Rights and the Freedom to Read statement of the American Library Association and, in doing so, does not practice censorship. No sites are intentionally blocked. The Library does not monitor and has no control over the information accessed and cannot be held responsible for the content, quality, or accuracy of the information retrieved. University policies, as well as Federal and State legal restrictions apply. (http://www.bradley.edu/irt/cs/policies/) The primary use of computers in the Library is to provide access to information in support of learning and research. Library workstations are not to be used for gaming or other recreational uses. Usage during peak times will be limited to 20 minutes.
GUIDELINES
Bradley University Library provides computers for the use of students, faculty and staff of the university. Some of the computers in the Library Reference Room are also available for public use. To protect the equipment, ensure effective and efficient functioning, and provide the appropriate level of access, the following guidelines, which are posted near all computers, are to be followed:
- During peak times, computer usage will be limited to 20 minutes per patron per incident of use.
- Class-related library assignments and research will receive top priority. Library workstations are not provided for recreational uses. Computers provided for public access to government information are so marked and access to such information will receive priority on designated workstations.
- Patrons may save information to an appropriate, portable storage device or send it via email. (Anything saved to the hard drive, including World Wide Web bookmarks, will be deleted). Computers are networked to a laser printer. Patrons are expected to pay for prints sent to a printer. Payment must be made using a copy card. Copy cards may be purchased in the Break Room.
- Student and Public wireless-networked laptops are available for checkout. Go to the Circulation Desk (for Public laptops) or the Laptop Desk (for Student laptops) for details.
Signs for computers will read:
- A 20-minute time limit on computer usage will be observed during peak usage times.
- No personal email or gaming (Research for class takes priority).
- Do not save things to the hard drive (files and bookmarks will be deleted).
